Windy waders

Today the wind and rain pelted the tip, here at Gedser. As a result, no standardised ringing. Lydia joined Gert and Benny for a birding trip in Jutland today, leaving the boys at home.

The Common Sandpiper we've been playing cat and mouse with for a couple of days finally baffled itself in the wader trap and was duly ringed.
Common sandpiper - Actitis hypoleucos. Photo: Anton Liebermann

Craig and Anton battled the elements for a couple of hours out at the tip watching migration. With visibility less than a kilometre and the wind gusting well over 20 m/s any birds were a result! We managed a few bits and bobs, all the waders were in very smart summer plumage, which is great to see.

Migrating between 11:15-13:15

Eider 95
Arctic Tern 9
Common Tern 48
Grey Heron 3
Common Gull 5
Black-headed Gull 34
Herring Gull 6
Great Black-backed Gull 1
Lesser Black-backed Gull 1 Juvenile
Teal 2
Sandwich Tern 2
Spotted Redshank 2
Redshank 1
Common Scoter 99
Curlew 1
Ruff 2
Golden Plover 1

Apologies, these are straight from the notebook and therefore not in taxonomical order.

Resting at the tip

Cormorant 46
Eider 440
Great Black-backed Gull 1
Common Scoter c250 (hard to count in the swelling sea)
Sandwich Tern 6
Common Sandpiper 1
Wood Sandpiper 1
Herring Gull 1
Mute Swan 4
Common Gull 1

A grey seal was about just offshore.

The forecast tomorrow looks a little more pleasant than recently, fingers crossed for some ringing and migration. It's starting to hot up though.

A lesser whitethroat was the only new passerine caught today.

Birding in the wind

The weather this morning was poor, a brisk southwesterly wind bringing horizontal rain and low visibility. With no option to open the nets, bird watching was the only thing.

A couple of hours at the tip in the morning produced a few quality birds, no quantity.

Migrants from the tip included

Dunlin 8
Curlew Sandpiper 1
Grey Plover 5
Redshank 1
Greenshank 1
Curlew 1
Snipe 2
Black Tern 2
Little Gull 1

With the migration tap switched off it was back to the station. Gert arrived and the three of us headed to Bøtø. A brief look between showers produced an impressive list of migrant waders.

Dunlin 35
Curlew Sandpiper 3
Ruff 17
Ringed Plover 18
Little Ringed Plover 1
Whimbrel 26
Curlew 2
Wood Sandpiper 21
Green Sandpiper 4
Common Sandpiper 3
Greenshank 7
Snipe 2
Temminck's stint 1

Also an impressive show from 2 Great white egrets, amongst 16 Grey Heron and a pair of White-tailed eagles were also observed.

In the afternoon a net was opened briefly but no new birds were caught. Hans brought Anton to the station in the evening, he will stay a fortnight, learning to ring and bird watching. Some wader traps were dusted off and placed by the freshwater pond in the south field, where common and green sandpiper have been frequenting. Fingers crossed for some success.

The weather tomorrow is improving with a dry but windy morning. We should be able to complete standardised, though conditions aren't favourable for migration.

Thanks for reading,

Craig

Standardized period starts again

Hello!!!

Yesterday, Monday 20th of July,  the standardized ringing period started again :) So, I´m going to ring every day again, can´t wait to see which new birds are in the nets again!! But the weather is not very agree with that, I think...
Yesterday I didn´t have much time, so two chronicles again together, (last time, I promise hehe). I think it's more easy  to start with today, 21th :
Today very early in the morning was very windy and raining, I have started to open the nets at the same hour like always, but I have closed the nets at 6:20 a.m...Only 3 hours of ringing. 2 new birds at the nets, and one recapture, Munk, Gransanger and Musvit. And that´s all about today, because it has continued raining until 10 a.m in the morning...

20th July, yesterday, was a normal ringing session, I needed to open the nets 30 mins.after the normal hour cause the rain...but OK, many birds in a interesting morning:

Jernspuv/ Dunnok 1
Rødstjert/ Redstart 1
Tornsanger/ Whitethroat 2
Munk/ Blackcap 1
Gransanger/ Chiffchaff 2
Løvsanger/ Wollow warbler 2
Skovspurv/ Treesparrow 1
Stillits/ Goldfinch 1
Tornirisk/ Linnet 4
Total: 15 birds of 9 species+5 recaptures= 20 birds :)

After the ringing, Gert and I went to do birdwatching in a beautiful place called " Kallø Grå". It was really fantastic!! I found 4 new species for me!!:

Islandsk Ryle (Calidris canutus)
Sortklire (Tringa erythropus)
Lille Kobbersneppe ( Limosa lapponica)
Storspove ( Numenius arquata)

Moreover of more beautiful species. Some of this Vadefugles are not really new for me (except the 4 of the list), but in Spain some of them are winter birds, and I only have seen them with winter feathers!!! Here they are completely different. It´s amazing.
Thank you very very very much Gert (and thank you to your wife too) for the little trip and for invite me to have dinner at you home yesterday :)

Sorry for the long chronicle hehehe
More, tomorrow. If the weather permits it, of course.

My sincerest apologies

Good night!
Sorry. I was wrong. I put that the Common Reed-Bunting was an adult female, (at the last chronicle of today - now corrected) but some of you have corrected me, it´s a young bird. I thought it was an adult because the feathers were very spoiled, and the young birds usually have all the feathers very new.

Really sorry. And thank you very much for the correction.

Good night, and sweet dreams every body.
See you on Monday.

A new interesting species for me

Hello everybody!!!

That´s the chronicle of today. Beautiful ringing day, with a lot of different species12!! Today is the last ringing day until the standardized period, until Monday. Sunny day. The results of today:

Rørsanger/ Reed warbler 2
Gulbug/ Icterine warbler 1
Tornsanger/ Whitethroat 1
Gransanger/ Chiffchaff 4
Træløber/ Eurasian treecreeper 1
Rødrygget Tornskad/ Red-back shrike 1
Stær/ Common starling 1
Skovspurv/ Tree sparrow 1
Tornirisk/ Linnet 1
Rørspurv/ Common Reed-Bunting 1 ** New species for my list!!

A beautiful Rørspurv :) and..why is special for me? Because is the first that I caught here in Denmark, and is the same case of the Munk or the Gransanger, is a winter bird for me :) In Spain, where I live, you only can see them in winter time.

Another interesting case is the Stær (a young bird), it was doing his first moult. Easy to see the beautiful differences between young old feathers and the new feathers.

For finish...always is a pleasure for me to catch this wonderful but angry bird...

See you on Monday my friends

Genmelding fra Italien/Recovery from Italy

This evening we would like go to the tip to see some birds...if the wind permit it, of course...

The good new of today, at least for me, a beautiful Yellow hammer singing near the nets, I hope to ring it some day :), it´s rare for me and I´m sure I will learn a lot.
I´m not sure if we´ll be able to ring tomorrow, the weather prediction says a lot of rain and wind for all day

Photos of today: A cute Hvid vipstjert, and a very beautiful Tornirisk. Do you agree?

Migration

Hello everybody!!!

Today has been a very common ringing day here in Gedser. No new species, but a lot of beautiful birds:

Jernspurv/ Dunnock 1
Solsort/ Blackbird 3
Gulbug/ Icterine warbler 3
Gærdesanger/ Lesser whitethroat 2
Tornsanger/ Common whitethroat 1
Havesanger/ Garden warbler 1
Munk/ Blackcap 2
Gransanger/ Chiffchaff  7
Tornirisk/ Linnet 4

Total_: 24 new birds of 9 species + 15 recaptures = 39 Birds!!!!! Great.

Today I have not been alone, I have a guest who is here just for seeing birds, and learning a lot of them. I ring alone, because he is so young (15 years old)  but, he is a good company :) Thanks Rasmus!!!

I would like to speak about migration because for me is a very beautiful and interesting thing. Lot of birds move every year from one part of the world to another, looking for the best weather for them. Since I´m here in Denmark, I see it a lot of times in mi ringings. For example, Munk (Sylvia atricapilla), is for me a winter bird!! In Spain you only can see them between October and February, more or less, but here, in Denmark, is a summer bird, they are breeding :) It´s veeeery interesting for me. Same case of the Phylloscopus collibyta (Chiffchaff).

Not only with ringings we can see the migration, of course. Only 10 minutes from me home, there is the "tip", at the southern most point of Denmark. Here, everyday, you see a lot of migrant birds starting their travel :) Every day I see a lot of eiders flying over the sea, cormorants, swans...Thank you Louis for show me that wonderful place.

For finish my chronicle of today, I would like to say Thank you very much, or Tak!! to Gert, because he has showed Rasmus and I his biiiiig collection of butterflies. It´s really amazing!!!!!

More and better, tomorrow :)

I´m back!!!

Hello!!!!

I´m here again :) and ringing again, too. The garden is beautiful with lot of flowers and lot of young birds starting to fly. Yesterday I couldn´t did the chronicle, but here there are the results:

Rørsanger/ Reed warbler 1
Gulbug/ Icterine warbler 1
Gærdesanger/ Lesser whitethroat 4
Tornsanger/ Whitethroat 3
Munk/ Black cap 1
Gransager/ Chif chaf  7
Løvsanger/ Willow warbler 1
Blåmejse/ Blue tit 1
Musvit/ Great tit 2
Tornirisk/ Linnet 1
Husrødstjert/ Black redstart 1 **  New specie for my list!!

Total: 23 birds of 11 species + 2 recaptures= 25 birds.

Well, the redstart is very common in Spain, but it´s the first time that I ring it here in Denmark :)

Today  hasn´t been a ringing day, because the wind...very very very strong. In my opinion, wind is very dangerous for the birds who are into the nets, cause the movement of the net, if the net moves a lot with the birds inside, it can hurt the bird. Hope it will be less windy tomorrow...

I would like show you two photos , one of the new specie of my list, and other of my totally new specie that I ringed before my travel to Copenhagen: The Stor flagspæette :) I hope you like these.

New ringing session, tomorrow!!!!

Lille status over foråret

Men her er listen:

Der er i alt mærket 64 arter!
Der er mærket 2967 fugle i perioden!
